Google Discontinuing YouTube Shorts on June 26, 2023. In a blog post, the company stated that it is shifting its focus to other areas such as Shorts, Community posts, and live videos.
YouTube officially launched the Stories feature in 2018 and initially made it available to creators with over 10,000 subscribers. It was created as a temporary post feature to allow creators to engage viewers for shorter periods of time while they worked on creating well-crafted videos. YouTube Shorts, like other platforms’ Stories features, would disappear after a set amount of time, allowing creators to share updates or behind-the-scenes content.
Google Discontinuing YouTube Shorts, this decision is part of a larger trend observed across various social media platforms. Snapchat’s Stories feature has been adopted by a number of companies, including Facebook and Instagram. Not all attempts to incorporate Stories-inspired features, however, have been successful. For example, Netflix introduced a feature called ‘Extras’ in its mobile app to share videos and photos from popular shows, but it eventually disappeared. LinkedIn also discontinued its Stories feature in 2021, and Spotify, despite recently introducing a similar feature for artist profiles, is focusing on its new TikTok-like discovery feed.
YouTube is expanding access to Community posts in addition to discontinuing Stories. Creators can use community posts to share text, images, and videos with their followers. They function similarly to blog posts, but they appear in a separate tab on a creator’s channel.
Additionally, YouTube is making it easier for creators to live stream. The company is expanding its live streaming platform with new features such as the ability to add polls and quizzes to live streams.
Google Discontinuing YouTube Shorts, the decision is a focus is shifting to other areas. Shorts are clearly the future of short-form video on the platform, and the company is making it easier for creators to live stream.
