Does your smartphone really need a screen protector?
You don’t want your expensive smartphone to have a scratchy screen. Some people believe that covering their phone screens with tempered glass will keep them from breaking. It is required if you are purchasing a phone from an offline store. Maybe you insisted on getting a phone with a screen protector. On rare occasions, the store owner will throw in a free tempered glass with your new phone. But is it really necessary to install tempered glass? Although many people still use screen protectors to protect their purchases, are they really necessary in light of recent advancements in display technology?
True, having a screen protector on your phone used to be practically mandatory. However, there have been significant changes in the materials used in modern smartphone displays over time. Although wearing a glass protector is unquestionably safe, you may not need one.

A screen protector is simply a clear plastic or extremely thin glass sheet that is adhered to the screen of your smartphone. You buy different glass protectors for different smartphones because they are cut to exact dimensions and have cutouts in the right places.
To apply a screen protector, first, clean the screen of your device with a microfiber cloth, then spritz it with soapy water and press it against the screen. Use a squeegee tool to remove water and bubbles and leave a flawlessly smooth surface that makes the protector invisible.
Corning Gorilla Glass is now used in the vast majority of Android phones. It is a hardened glass that is strong and scratch-resistant. In reality, Corning has been introducing new Gorilla Glass iterations for years. As of the time of writing in March 2022, the most recent iteration is Gorilla Glass Victus.
Gorilla Glass is designed to protect users from scratches and cracks. In general, one must be preferred over the other. Some variations were more difficult to fracture but more scratch-resistant than others, and vice versa. Corning maintains a constant state of equilibrium between the two.

Apple does not use Gorilla Glass on the iPhone. Instead, it employs “ceramic shield,” a special glass designed specifically for iPhones.
Ceramic Shield is more than a catchy brand name; it is a glass component. Ceramic nanocrystals smaller than the wavelength of light are used to make Ceramic Shield Glass appear as transparent as regular glass.
The end result is a tough, scratch- and drop-resistant material. Sadly, Apple does not provide much technical information about the Ceramic Shield. It simply claims to be “four times better” than previous iPhone versions. It’s impossible to directly compare Gorilla Glass and Ceramic Shield, but both are tough displays made by Corning.
Disadvantages of screen protectors
The great thing about screen protectors is that they change the feel of the touch-sensitive display. Glass, of course, feels better than plastic, which is why glass screen protectors have grown in popularity.
A piece of plastic or thin glass placed between you and the screen may alter its appearance, especially if the screen protector deteriorates over time. Additionally, screen protectors take up unattractive scratches that don’t really scratch the screen of your smartphone because they aren’t as tough as Gorilla Glass or Ceramic Shield.
All of this assumes that the screen protector was properly applied. If you’re not careful, the bottom of your screen protector may develop bubbles and fractures, necessitating the application of a new one.
So, Does your smartphone really need a screen protector?
Some common materials can scratch the display of any smartphone. The sand, which is shockingly tough, is one of the most amazing sights to behold. If you have sand in your pocket after visiting a beach, it can damage the glass screen of your smartphone. Surprisingly, hard rocks work in the same way. Gorilla Glass or Ceramic Shield displays can be scratched by other kinds of glass, rare metals, and even materials that are incredibly hard like diamonds.
Screen protectors are sometimes useful
Screen protectors have an unattractive appearance. They scuff easily and detract from the realistic appearance of your screen. Furthermore, finger grease adheres particularly well to plastic screen protectors, serving as an unpleasant reminder of all the different body functions that people possess.
However, at the moment, screen protectors are not worthless. Even though Gorilla Glass is tough enough to withstand a minor drop, it can still be scratched by rocks, sand, and rare metals. (such as diamonds). If you drop your phone on a gravel parking lot, it will look like hell, and if you put it in a sand pocket, it will be covered in microscopic scratches.
When was the last time you experienced one of these occurrences? Strange accidents don’t happen very often. Without a doubt, having a screen protector is a great idea in case something bad happens. Furthermore, if you work in a hazardous environment or have bad luck, a screen protector is unquestionably worthwhile. However, because mishaps are so rare for most people, replacing the screen may be more convenient, less difficult, and more bearable than replacing the screen protector on a monthly basis.
Although newer smartphones have “oleophobic” coatings that repel oil from your fingertips and reduce the appearance of unsightly fingerprints, screen covers still include anti-fingerprint coatings. Even if fingerprints appear, all you need to do is wipe the screen clean quickly—ideally with a microfiber cloth.
Screen protectors are no longer necessary. A modern smartphone with a “naked” screen is safe to use, and it shouldn’t make a difference if you keep it in the same pocket as your keys and money.
Because your keys and coins have the potential to scratch another area of your phone, you should keep them in a separate pocket.
