Learn what USB OTG is and how it works on Android devices. There are so many great uses worth checking out!

However useful they are, USB drives cannot be used with phones. If you don’t know how to use USB OTG and have an Android phone.

A device can read data from a USB device without a PC thanks to the standardized USB USB On-the-Go (OTG) specification. While using an OTG cable, the device itself takes on the role of the USB host.

OTG connections can be used, among other things, to connect your phone to a USB flash drive or a game controller.  Here, we’ll show you some great ways to use it with an Android device.

Check if your Android supports USB OTG.

The easiest way to see if your phone or tablet supports USB OTG is to check the box or the manufacturer’s website. A logo similar to the one above will appear, or USB OTG will be mentioned in the specifications. Information on USB OTG is also available in the device’s settings.

Another simple method is to utilize the USB OTG Checker app. It will instantly inform you whether the device supports USB OTG and which functionalities will work for you.

On Samsung and other mobile devices, OTG is turned on by default. Some manufacturers, on the other hand, may require you to enable it manually from Settings > Other settings > OTG.

What are the requirements for using USB OTG?

You have a regular Micro-USB or USB-C port on your Android device. But many USB gadgets need a full-sized USB port. You can solve this with a converter or adapter.

1. Connect the external hard drive and the flash drive.

Unsurprisingly, external storage tops this list. Just plug in your drive, and in a matter of seconds, you’ll be able to transfer all kinds of files.

External hard drives may or may not work; flash drives are the easiest to connect. Portable hard drives that draw power from phones won’t always work, but external drives with their own power source should work fine. The file types for these disks must be FAT32 or exFAT.

If you don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of transferring material, you can play music or videos directly from your OTG storage drive linked to your Android device.

2. Play with Video Game Controllers

Android P and later come with native compatibility for the Xbox One controller. But, older Xbox 360 controllers can be used with Android devices over USB OTG. It is as simple as plug-and-play to begin gaming using the controller. You must, of course, play games that are compatible with the controller.

3. Control Android with a keyboard and mouse.

Printers with basic plug-and-play USB interfaces, like keyboards, function well with Android devices. They enable you to start printing without a wireless connection or the requirement to first transfer anything to a Desktop.

From Android 4.0, Android has reduced support for USB mass storage mode. You must connect your USB device in PTP or MTP mode in order to print documents and photographs.

6.  Direct Image Transmission from DSLR to Android Phone

If you want to take photos from your digital camera directly onto your Android, you can do it via an OTG connection without using your laptop or SD card reader. A USB cable to connect to your camera and the OTG adapter is required.

The ability to connect your Ethernet connection to your Android phone for Internet access is a less well-known OTG feature. This can come in handy when you want to reduce ping while gaming online or get better internet speed from your Wi-Fi.

Certain smartphones may not support Ethernet via an OTG connection. Before you attempt it, make sure your phone supports this feature.

10. Charge Your Android Phone in the Reverse Direction

Many modern smartphones support reverse wireless charging by placing the charger on the glass back of a supported smartphone. If your phone doesn’t support this capability, you can still reverse-charge your device using an OTG adapter.
